Strange Wolf-like Animal Killed in Montana

It may look unusual but it is a wolf, based on its DNA, according to Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks.

A foreign-looking canine animal shot in fundamental Montana in May was a immature gray wolf, even if its unusual features fueled speculation information technology was some other species or hybrid, Montana Fish, Wild animals and Parks said Mon.

"It's not that surprising," Ty Smucker, an FWP wolf management specialist, said of the Deoxyribonucleic acid results confirming the animal was a gray wolf. "It's either going to be a gray wolf or a dog."

No wolf packs are established in fundamental Montana.

Nevertheless, Smucker noted, wolves travel bully distances and young dispersing animals bear witness up occasionally.

Inspection of the brute at the FWP wild fauna wellness lab in Bozeman revealed a relatively normal looking, nighttime chocolate-brown wolf, FWP said.

Physical variations aren't unusual for animals, said Curtis, the Fish and Wildlife Service geneticist.

"Inside species there can be variability that's not surprising at all," Curtis said.

Preconceptions about wolves, that they are huge animals with huge paws, may besides play into the confusion, she said.

"It doesn't suprise me you are going to run into some wolves on the smaller side," said Curtis, who too noted the wolf was immature.

FWP decided to have the wolf tested to make sure it was an actual wolf because hybrid wolf-dogs have been documented in cardinal and eastern Montana in the past, Smucker said.

Straughan, a Fish and Wildlife Service forensic scientist, wrote in a genetics test report on Dna taken from tissue samples. "It is the opinion of the undersigned examiner that this individual was not of either a gray wolf x coyote, or grey wolf x domestic canis familiaris, origin."
